Increasing African American and urban voter registration, education, and participation through outreach to targeted communities in California. We've registered over 200,000 voters and counting since 2002!
As we’ve written about before, AAVREP recommends a NO vote on Proposition 46 this fall.
This measure eliminates important provisions of the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA). These changes would make it easier and more profitable for lawyers to sue doctors, clinics and hospitals. This will increase medical costs for everyone, and could be especially harmful to underserved communities, local health clinics, and school based health services that have the least amount of resources to cover these additional costs. More information about this proposal available at NoOn46.com.
The higher cost of medical malpractice insurance resulting from passage of Prop 46, on top of the extraordinary cost of medical school, will continue to be a barrier to African Americans entering the medical profession. The costs of this measure could result in cutbacks and closures of medical facilities in our communities as well. These reasons are why we oppose Proposition 46, and recommend you vote NO as well.
